Muguruza battles past Bertens to reach Sydney last eight

first_imgTop seed Garbine Muguruza overcame an injury scare to battle past Kiki Bertens 6-3 7-6(6) and advance to the Sydney International quarter-finals on Wednesday. The Wimbledon champion accepted a wildcard into the tournament after retiring with leg cramps during her opening match at the Brisbane International last week and called for a medical time-out after the third game against Bertens. The Spanish world number three, however, returned to the Ken Rosewall Arena in full flow, breaking her Dutch opponent twice to surge 5-1 clear, while allaying fears of another injury setback ahead of next week’s Australian Open.Bertens, who had won all three previous meetings against Muguruza in straight sets, recovered one of the breaks to halt her opponent’s march but the two-time grand slam winner regrouped to close out the opening set.Muguruza broke at the start of the second set against the 26-year-old world number 32 but struggled to impose herself during the key moments, only converting three of 13 break-point opportunities and dropping her serve in the eighth game. The Spaniard, however, sealed victory on her fourth match point in the tiebreak when Mertens hit a return long and will next meet the winner of the all-Australian second-round clash between Daria Gavrilova and Samantha Stosur in the last eight.“I struggled a little bit today and I had to adapt my game a bit because of my condition,” Muguruza said in a court-side interview after registering her first win of the season.“I managed to win and that’s the important thing I guess. Melbourne is next week and I’m still here. There’s a lot of top-10 players here and it’s going to be a battle.”Agnieszka Radwanska, the 2013 champion and last year’s finalist in Sydney, kept her preparations for the year’s first grand slam on course with a 7-6(4) 6-0 win over teenage American qualifier CiCi Bellis. The Polish 28-year-old will meet two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova or Italian qualifier Camila Giorgi for a place in the last four.“For sure in that match the first set was the key, key point in that match,” Radwanska said. “It was really tight, and a lot of good tennis in that first set. I think she was a little bit upset about losing that first set.”In the men’s draw, Italian veteran Paolo Lorenzi ousted top seed Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain in straight sets in the second round.Ramos-Vinolas needed treatment for a leg problem early in the second set and fell 6-3 7-5 to the 36-year-old Lorenzi, who is ranked 45 in the world.last_img read more

Man United transfer news: The free-scoring attacker being ‘tracked’ by the Red Devils, but is he needed?

first_imgTrabzonspor’s Ghana international Abdul Majeed Waris has emerged as a shock transfer target for Manchester United, according to the Turkish club’s chief executive Burak Gurdal.Gurdal confirmed United are keeping close tabs on Waris and assistant manager Ryan Giggs is believed to have scouted the forward in Trabzonpor’s Europa League game against Lokeren last week. With that in mind talkSPORT takes a look at the Ghanian and where he would fit in at Old Trafford.Who is he?Waris, 23, is a striker who currently plies his trade in Turkey with Super Lig side Trabzonspor, joining the club in September for €6m.He started his career in Sweden with BK Hacken, netting 30 goals in 63 appearances before moving to Russian side Spartak Moscow in 2012.The striker was loaned to French Ligue 1 club Valenciennes in January this year, and rose to prominence scoring nine goals in 16 games, but it wasn’t enough to help the club avoid relegation to Ligue 2.The Ghana international has been capped 14 times by his country, scoring three goals and his performances for Valenciennes earned him a place in Ghana’s World Cup squad this summer, where he featured against Portugal.Do United need him?Waris operates as a central striker, but he can also play as an attacking midfielder and has been used on the wing for Trabzonspor so far this season.Given United’s attacking threat and the investment on the likes of Juan Mata, Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao, it’s surprising that Waris’s name has emerged as a potential target. If a move did materialise, you’d expect the Ghanaian to struggle to hold down a regular first team place and with reports suggesting he commands a £12m fee, it makes the departure of Danny Welbeck all the more strange. With Javier Hernandez still contracted to the club (on loan at Real Madrid), and young striker James Wilson playing a prominent role in the first team squad this season, a move for Waris appears slightly left-field, but the interest gives an insight in the type of player and squad Louis Van Gaal is looking to assemble.United fans, what do you think about the club’s interest in Waris? Do United need another forward? 1 Abdul Majeed Waris has emerged a shock transfer target for Manchester United and with that in mind talkSPORT takes a look at who he is and where he fits in. last_img read more

Countrywide shows it can weather storm

first_imgAmerican Home Mortgage owes Countrywide an undisclosed amount of money. In its filing, Countrywide said it owned $11.4 billion in commercial debt, $15.4 billion in asset-backed debt supported by bank commitments, $34.7 billion in asset-backed commercial debt, and $33.3 billion in repurchase agreements on loans and loan-backed bonds. The company also has $124.7 billion in credit lines. Further, Countrywide’s bank subsidiary has access to $64.2 billion through loans, bonds and other investments. Countrywide said it has access to $186.5 billion total through these liquidity pools, after subtracting its own debt.160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. CALABASAS – Countrywide Financial Corp. said Monday that it has access to $46.2 billion in cash, credit lines and other investments, a move aimed at reassuring nervous investors that the nation’s biggest mortgage lender can weather a market downturn. The Calabasas-based company made the disclosure in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on the same day American Home Mortgage Investment Corp., the nation’s 10th-largest home lender, filed for bankruptcy protection. Last week, Countrywide issued a statement indicating it had access to “nearly $50 billion” through short-term borrowing arrangements. The lender on Monday said it has $46.2 billion in “highly reliable short-term funding liquidity.” The company did not immediately respond to a request to explain the discrepancy in the numbers. Shares of Countrywide Financial climbed $1.75, or 7 percent, to finish at $26.75. The mortgage industry has seen a liquidity drain in recent weeks. The market that sees banks buy loans is in distress because investors have soured on risky debt. With mortgage loans losing value, many sources that provide financing for home loans have cut off lenders from borrowing more money. More than 50 lenders have gone bankrupt this year. American Home Mortgage said Monday that a cold housing market and a spike in payment defaults scared investors away from mortgage debt, including bonds and other securities backed by home loans. last_img read more

What a Clever deal! – Mazzarri keen to keep midfielder Tom permanently

first_img1 Watford head coach Walter Mazzarri is eager to keep Tom Cleverley at Vicarage Road beyond the end of the season. The Hornets signed Cleverley on loan from Everton in January with a view to a permanent transfer and the midfielder has settled in quickly at his new club.Watford have gone four Premier League matches unbeaten with Cleverley on the pitch, including back-to-back wins over Arsenal and Burnley, both of which the 27-year-old started.Cleverley will be aiming to make it three from three against his old club Manchester United on Saturday and Mazzarri hopes his new acquisition stays at Watford for good.“I want to say Tom Cleverley has surprised me in a positive way in how well he managed to get in this environment,” Mazzarri said.“It seems like he has been playing for us since a long time. Of course it would make me very happy if he would stay here with us because he is not only a great player but we need him as well.”Cleverley was one of three January arrivals at Watford along with M’Baye Niang and Mauro Zarate, both of whom started the win against Burnley, with Niang heading home the decisive goal. After a disappointing Christmas period, Watford appear to have turned a corner, having climbed to 10th in the table and 10 points clear of the relegation zone.Mazzarri believes the new signings have given the whole squad a lift. “I always said that competition is very important for us and for the players,” Mazzarri said.“The players that are coming back and starting to play means there is competition. “Even Troy (Deeney), you see he is doing extremely well now, much more than before.“He knows that I expect the maximum intensity in training because at the end of training I take my decisions and decide who can play.” The ex-Manchester United man has pleasantly surprised Mazzarri last_img read more

Church, IRS on collision course

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREThe joys and headaches of holiday travel: John Phillips“This church cannot be silent or indifferent in the face of dehumanizing or destructive public policies,” said Bacon, adding that church leaders have been conferring with their lawyers and will decide whether to comply with the summons this week. He suggested that ignoring the IRS request would give the church the chance to make its case in a court of law, a prospect which drew applause and a standing ovation from the congregation, which filled nearly every pew in the church. “I think I get your drift,” Bacon told churchgoers after the applause died down. He suggested that if the IRS was successful in its efforts against All Saints, it would inhibit religious groups across the country from commenting on issues as varied as the “unjust war in Iraq, violations of the Geneva Convention, bigotry based on sexual orientation, genocide in Darfur” and other politically charged topics. Church members participating in a homecoming celebration after the sermon said they were behind Bacon and other church leaders. PASADENA – The congregation of All Saints Episcopal Church cheered defiantly Sunday when it was suggested that the church might not comply with an Internal Revenue Service summons, foreshadowing what could turn into a legal battle between All Saints and the federal government. Church officials received the summons Friday. It requests a number of church documents relating to a guest sermon by former rector George Regas, given two days before the November 2004 presidential election, in which Regas was critical of President George W. Bush’s policies on the Iraq war, abortion and poverty. But Regas stopped short of endorsing either presidential candidate in his sermon. The IRS is asking for all documents detailing church policy on political campaigning, guest sermons and responses to the IRS summons itself to be turned over by Sept. 29, and that the current rector, the Rev. Ed Bacon, testify before an IRS agent Oct. 11. At stake is the church’s tax-exempt status as a religious organization. In his sermon Sunday, Bacon characterized the summons as an attack on the church’s constitutional rights of freedom of religion and expression. “I totally support what the church is doing,” said Robin Perry of Glendale, who has been a member of All Saints since 1990. She compared the IRS inquiry to the persecution of dissident churches under autocratic regimes. “In a totalitarian government, anyone who speaks against the government is targeted,” Perry said. “This church is known for being outspoken about the truth, and that is exactly what is happening here.” Fifteen-year church member Marita Pinkel of Arcadia said she was proud of Bacon and his fellow clergy for standing up to the government. “I feel this is a moment in history, a chance for us to make a huge difference,” she said. “I feel the American people need a catalyst, and it likely will come from many sources, but we will be an important one by standing up for what we truly stand for.” But the church’s senior warden said there was still a chance All Saints would comply with the IRS request. “I’ve been through the documents and I think it fully supports our position that we have not been in violation of the IRS regulations,” Robert Long said.
